Liturgical Season

Beginning February 14 this year, Ash Wednesday, we are in the season of Lent, wherein all Christians are invited “to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word” (BCP, p. 265). Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends before Easter Sunday (March 31 this year). Lent lasts for 40 days, in commemoration of the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. The last three days of Lent are the sacred Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. The liturgical color for the season of Lent is purple, the color of humility, penance, and wisdom that comes from inward discernment.
